Why the metal goes before the timber

Cedar tolerates central Oklahoma reasonably well. Zinc plated screws and thin stamped hinges do not. Wind loading works fasteners loose, plating wears away at the pivot, and once a hinge has play in it every gust widens the screw holes a little further. Timber around a failing fastener then gets blamed for a problem the metal started.

The usual first three jobs

  • Hinges with visible play, or screw heads standing proud of the leaf
  • Cracked or missing boards after a hail day
  • Softness where a post meets the ground, especially where mulch is piled against it

Repair or replace

The honest test is structural. Posts and rails hold a fence up; boards are cladding. A fence with sound posts and one ruined section is a repair job whatever it looks like from the street. A fence where a probe sinks into three or four posts at grade is already on a countdown, and money spent on boards there is money spent twice.

The local specifics

Clay swells and shrinks through the year, so posts shift slightly, and a gate that closed cleanly in February can bind in May. Long dry summers open joints. Spring hail chips and splits face boards. None of that is unusual and none of it proves a fence was built badly, though it does mean wood here wants looking over once a year rather than being left alone until something falls down.

Decay happens at the line, not underground

Posts rarely rot from the buried end upward. Damage concentrates in a band an inch or two either side of grade, where the timber gets moisture and air together. Dig down beside a failed post and the wood eight inches under is often still firm while the section at ground level crumbles between finger and thumb.

What keeps that band wet

Clay holds water against timber long after the surface looks dry. Add a concrete collar that has cracked, or one troweled flat instead of sloped, and rainfall collects in a ring at exactly the vulnerable point. Sprinkler heads clipping the fence line every morning do the same job more reliably than weather ever manages. Turning a head a few degrees away, or dropping its arc, removes a daily soaking that no amount of treatment will out last.

Probing rather than guessing

Push an awl or a long screwdriver into the timber at grade on all four faces. Sound cedar resists and the point stops within an eighth of an inch. Decayed wood swallows the tool half an inch or more under light pressure. Test every post in the run, not only the one leaning, because a leaning post is usually the second or third to go rather than the first.

Repair options

  • A steel spur or post mender driven alongside the stub and bolted through will carry a post whose above ground length is still solid
  • Sistering a treated timber beside it works where the fence has a short life ahead of it anyway
  • Full replacement means breaking out the old concrete, which is where the real labour sits

A spur has a fair record on one bad post in an otherwise healthy fence. Used on five posts in a row, it is a way of paying for the same job twice.

Setting a replacement so it lasts

Six inches of compacted gravel beneath the post lets water leave rather than pooling against end grain. Crown the concrete so it sheds outward on every face. Keep soil, mulch and bed edging an inch or two clear of the timber, because anything banked against wood traps damp at the exact band that fails.

Timing the work

A post that fails the probe but still stands is a job for a dry autumn week, when clay digs cleanly and no storm sits in the forecast. Waiting until spring wind lays it over converts a controlled swap into an emergency with three broken boards attached to it.

Match the board before pulling anything

Cedar fence boards come in more variations than people expect. Widths run at five and a half or seven and a quarter inches, thicknesses at five eighths or three quarters, and tops are cut square, dog eared or pointed. Measure the damaged board in place, photograph the top cut, and buy its replacement first, unless you have somewhere to hold the old one up for comparison.

Getting the old one out

Each board is fixed to two or three horizontal rails. Work a flat bar behind it at every rail and lever slowly against a block of scrap so the bar never crushes the boards either side. Rushing this splits the neighbours, and a one board job becomes a four board job. Where nail heads have already pulled through the face, cut the shanks behind the board with a reciprocating blade rather than fighting them.

Fasteners

Ring shank stainless or hot dipped galvanised nails grip cedar and leave it clean. Electroplated fasteners streak the face black within a season here, and those streaks never come off. Two fixings per rail, set in three quarters of an inch from the edge, is plenty. Driving them right at the edge guarantees a split on the first hot dry week.

Leave a gap

Cedar arrives wetter than it will stay. A board butted tight against its neighbours in spring will cup or push once summer dries it out. An eighth of an inch of space either side is the normal allowance and it costs nothing to leave. Hold a scrap of ply or a couple of stacked washers against the last board as a spacer while you nail, and the spacing stays honest along the whole run.

Colour

Fresh timber beside fifteen year old grey cedar looks precisely like what it is, and nothing hides that immediately. Left alone it weathers close over one or two seasons. Where the mismatch cannot be lived with, a solid colour product applied across the entire run is the only fix that works, since treating one board on its own makes it stand out more.

Check the rail behind the gap

A board that cracked without hail or an impact usually had help. Push on the rail behind the opening while it is exposed. If the rail flexes, or if a fixing came out with wet fibres stuck to it, the rail is the real fault and the next board along will go the same way shortly. A rail that has softened where it meets the post can often be scabbed with a short length of treated timber bolted through, which buys several years without touching the rest of the run.

Gate Hinge Hardware and the Geometry That Wears It Out

A hinge carries a lever, not a weight

A four foot wide gate hanging on two hinges does not simply press down on them. The far stile acts as a lever arm, so a leaf weighing sixty pounds can pull on the top hinge with several times that force. Every hardware decision follows from this one fact. The wider the gate and the more solid the infill, the harder the top hinge is being pulled straight out of the post.

Screws against through bolts

Most builder grade gates hang on wood screws driven into a cedar post. Cedar is soft. Under repeated pull the threads crush the fibres and the screw starts backing out, which shows first as play at the top of the leaf, before anything visibly droops. Swapping those screws for carriage bolts run right through the post spreads load across the whole section rather than across half an inch of thread.

Hardware types and what each suits

  • Strap hinges distribute load along the rail and suit wide timber leaves
  • Butt and barrel hinges are compact, and belong on narrow light gates
  • Adjustable tension hinges let small movement be dialled out without rehanging anything
  • Self closing spring hinges apply constant load and need heavier fixing than they normally get

Wind is the local variable

A six foot solid privacy leaf is a sail. Edmond gets sustained spring wind, and each gust that catches that surface works the fixings. Gates facing an open field or sitting on a corner lot lose their hardware years earlier than an identical gate tucked between two houses. Where a gate takes that exposure, oversize the metal at the start instead of buying it twice.

Geometry that keeps hardware alive

A gate frame braced diagonally from the bottom hinge corner up to the top latch corner puts the brace in compression, which is what timber handles well. Reverse that diagonal and the brace works in tension, doing almost nothing, so the hinges absorb what the frame should have taken. Check brace direction before buying replacement hardware, because the wrong diagonal will chew through good metal just as quickly.

Signs the hardware is finished

Rust bleeding down the post, an audible knock as the leaf swings, an elongated screw hole, or a pin you can lift the gate off without unfastening a thing. Any one of those points at the metal rather than the wood, and replacing a board will change nothing.
