Gate Hinge Hardware and the Geometry That Wears It Out
A hinge carries a lever, not a weight
A four foot wide gate hanging on two hinges does not simply press down on them. The far stile acts as a lever arm, so a leaf weighing sixty pounds can pull on the top hinge with several times that force. Every hardware decision follows from this one fact. The wider the gate and the more solid the infill, the harder the top hinge is being pulled straight out of the post.
Screws against through bolts
Most builder grade gates hang on wood screws driven into a cedar post. Cedar is soft. Under repeated pull the threads crush the fibres and the screw starts backing out, which shows first as play at the top of the leaf, before anything visibly droops. Swapping those screws for carriage bolts run right through the post spreads load across the whole section rather than across half an inch of thread.
Hardware types and what each suits
- Strap hinges distribute load along the rail and suit wide timber leaves
- Butt and barrel hinges are compact, and belong on narrow light gates
- Adjustable tension hinges let small movement be dialled out without rehanging anything
- Self closing spring hinges apply constant load and need heavier fixing than they normally get
Wind is the local variable
A six foot solid privacy leaf is a sail. Edmond gets sustained spring wind, and each gust that catches that surface works the fixings. Gates facing an open field or sitting on a corner lot lose their hardware years earlier than an identical gate tucked between two houses. Where a gate takes that exposure, oversize the metal at the start instead of buying it twice.
Geometry that keeps hardware alive
A gate frame braced diagonally from the bottom hinge corner up to the top latch corner puts the brace in compression, which is what timber handles well. Reverse that diagonal and the brace works in tension, doing almost nothing, so the hinges absorb what the frame should have taken. Check brace direction before buying replacement hardware, because the wrong diagonal will chew through good metal just as quickly.
Signs the hardware is finished
Rust bleeding down the post, an audible knock as the leaf swings, an elongated screw hole, or a pin you can lift the gate off without unfastening a thing. Any one of those points at the metal rather than the wood, and replacing a board will change nothing.
